Windmore & Kids

Art Smart
Art Smart is…

  • Taking three primary colors and creating the colors of the rainbow
  • Creating a collage from household items
  • Knowing that even if you are shy, you can be an important part of a theater production
  • Expressing emotion through writing, drawing, playing music, and dancing
  • Appreciating the talents of others, even if you think you have none of your own
  • Letting your imagination guide your hands to the paper, your feet to the floor, and take you to new places.
  • Never saying “There’s nothing to do!”

Art in the Park
Art in the Park is a summer program for children ages 6–12. Paula Stafford and Mary Allen founded Art in the Park in 1988 because of the lack of an art program in Culpeper County elementary schools. The first classes were held at Yowell Meadow Park, but the weather necessitated a move to an inside location. Local churches have generously opened their doors to the program in the past, and now The Depot hosts the sessions.

Each summer, classes are held for two one-week sessions. The classes for 6–8 year old children are one hour long, while those for 9–12 year old children are an hour and a half. The program culminates in an art show of the children’s work.

Art in the Park teachers are volunteers who share their various talents with the children. Past classes have included basket making, painting, t-shirt design, printmaking, and origami.

The Children’s Theater
The Children’s Theater was founded in 1996 in conjunction with Culpeper Parks and Recreation Department. “It grew, for several years, to a year-round, hands-on theatrical experience for children ages 8-18 with theatrical productions in both the summer and winter. Due to a number of factors, the children’s production is in the summer only currently.

Apart from, but in conjunction with, the summer children’s theater production is the summer children’s theater workshop. Children may enroll for the workshop and not participate in the summer production and vice-versa.
Some of the most recent summer productions are HONK, Jr., Dear Edwina, Aladdin, Jr., Fiddler on the Roof and The Music Man, Jr.
